What advantages does our program have?

  • Coursework includes computer and communications training, sales, and business management. Other required coursework is traditional to livestock degrees, but students have the option of taking courses specific to their interests. Options also exist for students who wish to pursue pre-veterinary studies.
  • Faculty research interests include reproductive management or livestock species and cost effective/nutritious feed alternatives for cattle.
  • Hands-on, technology-infused learning equals an advantage in the job market.
  • UMC has it's own ultrasound machine that students use to diagnose pregnancy and cardiac issues.

Direct, Applied Experience Working with Animals
UMC students gain direct experience working with University-owned and local herds of dairy and beef cattle, swine, and sheep and have many opportunities to apply the theory and skills they are learning in the classroom. In addition, class field trips include visits to approximately 30 farms. UMC students also have access to the 100-head Northwest Research and Outreach Center Dairy Facility and Beef Feedlot Facilities.

The University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) is located on the north end of the UMC campus. It houses the Animal and Equine Science faculty offices, an interactive television (ITV) classroom, networked classrooms, a science lab, and stables. The building was dedicated in 1993 and has won national awards for architectural design.

Clubs and Professional Organizations

  • Dairy Club
    The UMC Dairy Club participates in numerous events including the Collegiate American Dairy Science Knowledge Bowl and The World Dairy Exposition.
  • Animal Science Association
    The UMC Animal Science Association participates in numerous events including a major livestock show (Denver, Houston, etc.)
  • Ag-Arama Club & Annual Event
    Ag-Arama is a weekend event on campus for students, faculty, and community with numerous competitions in Animal Science, Horticulture, and Agronomy. The club organizes and hosts the event as well as working with community members, participating in community service projects, and forming friendships with others in the club.
  • Professional Organizations
    UMC is also active within other organizations that offer many opportunities for students who enjoy animal judging. They include:

    - the annual World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin,
    - the annual North American Livestock Expo in Louisville, Kentucky
    - the annual North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) dairy contest
    - UMC also sponsors its own judging contests on campus as part of its annual Ag-Arama event.

 

 

Industry Involvement

  • UMC's Strategic plan includes the implementation of Program Improvement Audit Committees (PIAC) to aid in the implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of each program.
  • The membership of the Animal Science PIAC is comprised of people with diverse backgrounds and interests, including representatives from business, industrial, educational, and health organizations, as well as from the University faculty and students.
