- Graduates of University of Minnesota, Crookston's (UMC) Equine Science program understand and are able to meet the daily care, nutrition, health care, and exercise/training needs of horses in their care.
- Our graduates have the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the equine or equine-related employment and have the business and management experience necessary to operate an equine or relate business.
- At UMC we balance the practical skills students need to work with and care for horses and the theory required to build a successful career.
- We focus on the business and management aspects of the horse industry, thus providing a broad-based education that appeals to employers.
- Our Equine Pre-Vet Emphasis option gives UMC graduates the large animal hands on experience that is beneficial when seeking veterinary school or an advanced degree.
- Small class sizes ensure more practical skills are gained and you have better communication with your instructor.
- UMC offers many leadership opportunities in various clubs from the Horseman's Association, Rodeo Club, and Equestrian Team.
- Gain valuable riding skills, time management and team building skills by riding on the NCAA Equestrian Team.
- Internship programs offering valuable experience and networking contacts that may lead to permanent positions.
Currently there are over 40 horses residing at the UMC stable. Students train, ride, groom, breed, show, and care for these horses in order to gain hands-on experience with a wide range of breeds. Students are not assigned to one horse in particular (unless they are in the training and showing class), but rather work with and ride a variety of the horses. These horses are the core of the program, and without them the program couldn't exist!
