A career with a "growing" future
According to the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute, "an industry appraisal spearheaded by the Minnesota Nursery & Landscaping Association reveals that Minnesota’s nursery and landscape business is a multi-billion dollar industry that grew 97 percent over the past five years." The study also shows " the state’s professional green industry generates yearly sales of more than $2.1 billion. About $350 million comes from trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and potted plants grown on more than 22,000 acres. An additional 13 million square feet of greenhouse space is used to grow everything from azaleas to zinnias." Read the full article.

A Strategy for a Successful Career
In University of Minnesota, Crookston's (UMC) Horticulture program, you will learn the fundamentals that build successful, life-long careers. These skills are not only essential in horticultural operations, they are easily transferable throughout other industries. In addition to a well-rounded horticultural background, you'll also gain:
- an awareness of global market forces and competition
- sound decision-making abilities
- practical interpretation and application of research
- effective personal communication techniques
As an example, UMC students in the Horticulture program plan, grow, and sell annual holiday plant crops such as poinsettias and Easter lilies. They are completely responsible for all aspects of these holiday specialty crops. This type of "real-world" scenario prepares UMC Hort grads with a true representation of the career they are working toward.
The fact that UMC also offers degree programs in Golf and Turf Management, Agronomy, and Natural Resources--Park Management allows our students even more options to specialize in an area of interest.
