in Plummer, MN that is owned and operated by LeRoy and Carol Stumpf. They started their vineyard as a hobby with a love of the land and a few grape vines. That hobby has turned into a passion for growing grapes and making wine at their small farm vineyard and winery. They have put their faith in some of the best grape varieties developed by the University of Minnesota and legendary grape breeder, Elmer Swenson. Neil’s Quality Meats
One of the pasta sauces is made from Italian sausage from Neil’s Quality Meats in McIntosh, MN. Started in 1971, Neil’s has been in business for 35 years, and they are experts at making Scandinavian specialty foods and wild game sausages along with providing a full retail meat market and specialty store. Neil’s Quality Meats is owned and operated by Neil and Carol Bursheim. Their son, Bob follows in both his grandfather’s and his father’s footsteps as he works along side his parents in the store. Noreen Thomas , with her husband, Lee, farms 1,200 certified organic acres with rotations of soybeans, popcorn, wheat, barley, blue corn, alfalfa and a large community garden with a wide array of heirloom vegetables dating back as far as the 1700s. A diverse grower Noreen and Lee take care to use the best and most environmentally sound production methods. No herbicides or pesticides are used on their farm; rather, they utilize plantings to attract insects and rotations to break pest cycles for the greatest benefit. Noreen was awarded the 2004 Siehl Prize for her extraordinary contribution to agriculture and alleviation of world hunger. The breads for the centennial dinner are the work of Noreen and her Clay County 4-H Club members and Noreen has helped secure the local foods for the centennial dinner.

Spokely Farms was established in 1871 as one of the first settlers in the Climax/Nielsville Minnesota area. They are currently the fifth generation who continues to farm and provided the potatoes for the centennial dinner. Potato production is an important part of this operation and their red table and seed potatoes are shipped across the United States and Canada. Lonnie Spokely is a 2003 graduate of UMC and is their sales representative along with partners Rodney and Francis.
Bridge Street Candle Company
The Bridge Street Candle Company/On the Right Track Gift Gallery, owned and operated by Robert and Joyce Johnson of Crookston, made the special maroon candles used in the table decorations at the centennial dinner. The maroon tapers, like all Bridge Street candles, are hand poured and they can be made in any color or scent. The gift shop carries many locally made items. UMC Horticulture Club
The floral arrangements on the tables for the centennial dinner are the work of the UMC Horticulture Club
. The club is composed of students who have an interest in plants. The club has bi-weekly plant sales to sell houseplants that are propagated by the horticulture students and specialty crops such as Poinsettias, Chrysanthemums, Cinerarias, Gerbera Daisies, Easter Lilies, and Hibiscus are grown solely by the horticulture students. The club actively makes flower arrangements for other clubs and activities on campus such as for Torch and Shield, Ag Arama, Sno Daze, and Homecoming. Clocks handcrafted in a variety of woods by the Lundin Shop, owned by woodworking artisan Marv Lundin of Thief River Falls, were gifts for the platform guests participating in the inaugural ceremony. The clocks were laser engraved to commemorate the inauguration. Lundin, a native of Warren, MN, spent 45 years in the newspaper business and was editor at The Times in Thief River Falls for 37 of those years. He was named the Conservation Communicator of the Year in 1979 an award given by the Minnesota Wildlife Conservation Federation and the National Wildlife Federation. Following his retirement in 1999, Lundin took up woodworking in earnest. Lundin also made a clock for the Minnesota Room in the Student Center at UMC. It graces the restored mantel from the original Dining Hall built as part of the Northwest School of Agriculture.
Widman’s Candy Shop
Widmanís Candy Shop has locations in Crookston, MN, Grand Forks, ND, and Fargo, ND. Widmanís in Crookston opened in 1911 and is owned and operated by George and Lois Widman. They carry on the Widman tradition of handmade quality candy that began with Georgeís grandfather, a candy maker. Georgeís father, George H. Widman, along with his mother and brother, run the Grand Forks store while his sister, Carol Widman Kennedy owns and operates the Fargo location. They have covered many locally grown foods in their famous chocolate including potato chips, wheat nuts, soybeans, and sunflower seeds. They are responsible for the special centennial chocolates bearing the UMC centennial logo, which were part of the gift given to everyone attending the inauguration ceremony. Watercolor artist LaVonne Forsberg is a native of Goodridge, Minnesota, and currently lives in Thief River Falls. In 2001, she was commissioned by the State of Minnesota to paint the Old Mill for the Minnesota State Park entrance permit. Forsberg has also been a member’s choice award winner at Artists of Minnesota. Since 1979, her work has focused on watercolor, but she has worked in many mediums including stained glass. In 2005, Forsberg was commissioned to paint three watercolors to hang in the Kiehle Building. The paintings are of the Student Center, Kiehle Building, and the Peterson Gazebo and were featured on the note cards given to guests at today’s inaugural ceremony. Forsberg’s artwork has been shown in Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Montague’s Flower Shop in Crookston provided the floral arrangements for the inaugural ceremony. Owned and operated by Stephanie Paverud, Montague’s is a f ull service flower shop offering fresh flowers for all occasions, silk and dried pieces and a large selection of green and blooming plants. The balloon arch located in Bede Ballroom was designed by Crookston Floral. They offer fresh and silk flowers for weddings and other occasions, floral tributes, and art gallery items including Terry Redlin art and gift items.
