Mark Dufner graduated from Maddock High School in 1987. From there he went on to attend Valley City State University. In his five years at Valley he played inside linebacker for four years, and was a two time Academic All-American. He then was a student coach for a season working with defensive ends. He then moved on to Valley City High School where he taught and coached for seven years as an assistant coach. He was defensive coordinator for a year, special teams coordinator for five years, and the offensive line and linebacker coach.

In 1998 he obtained his masters degree from Minot State University. He then taught and was an assistant coach at Moorhead High School. At UMC he will be teaching college algebra, coaching linebackers, and working as the recruiting coordinator.
