Bio:

Theresa Helgeson grew up in the beautiful city of Duluth Minnesota where she found her calling in high school taking Horticulture classes. She attended University of Minnesota Crookston from 1992-96 and recieved a B.S. degree in Horticulture. During this time she was able to work with the City of Duluth Grounds Department in the summers. She also worked with the University of Minnesota Northwest Experiment Station assisting with vegetable trials during the summer of 1995. After graduation from UMC she worked for a major wholesaler perennial grower, Blue Bird Nursery, in Nebraska . While there she was able to do plant tissues culture as a Micro-propagationist. Later she moved back to Minnesota and worked with, Shady Oaks Nursery, the largest wholesaler of Hostas, as a micro-propagationist. During her employment there she worked closely with the Director of Research and Development on the breeding program. Theresa moved back to Crookston , where her husband is originally from, and started working at UMC as the Lab Services Coordinator in the January of 2004. Theresa coordinates the operations of the UMC greenhouses, orders supplies for the labs, as well as, supervises 9 to12 work-study students each year. She is a member of the Minnesota Horticulture Society, and the National Hosta Society as well as a Certified Professional of the Minnesota Nursery Landscape Association.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate day to day operation of the greenhouses and lab facilities

  • Maintain facilities, plant materials, equipment, and teaching supplies

  • Maintain, collect and preserve plant materials; move and prepare soil

  • Work with faculty and staff to coordinate greenhouse and classroom space

  • Supervision of student workers
