March 6, 2008 (Crookston, MN): On March 12, 2008, Los Angeles-based band Raining Jane will play a concert at University of Minnesota, Crookston as part of a five month tour of colleges across America. Their performance will be at 7 p.m. in the Kiehle Auditorium. The performance by Raining Jane is one of a series of events on the Crookston campus honoring Women’s History Month. |
Raining Jane is an all-female, independent acoustic-rock band, touring nationally to support the release of their third studio recording, “The Paper Nest.” This long-awaited EP will feature eight tracks of Raining Jane originals, recorded in Los Angeles during brief pockets of time off the road in the Fall and Winter of 2007. Raining Jane’s current tour began on January 24th and will take them to 50 venues across the U.S. The band has toured the college and club circuits for four years, playing over 120 shows per year, and becoming know for their engaging, playful and musically-rich performances. Because of the heavy tour regimen, it was challenging to find time to record another record, but they finally did, and they are very excited to finally share the results.
Aside from touring and recording, the ladies of Raining Jane have kept themselves very busy with several other exciting projects. In the summer of 2007, all four band members volunteered at the Rock & Roll Camp For Girls, in Portland, Oregon, where they coached young girls in the fine art of making noise and rocking out. Also that summer, the band toured the west coast with singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, who makes a guest appearance on “The Paper Nest.” Raining Jane has also been collaborating with Jason Mraz for the past year. The band is featured on Mraz’s “Silent Love Song,” a song that was recently released on a Fire Relief CD compilation benefitting victims of the 2007 San Diego wildfires. Raining Jane is endorsed by Fender, the world’s leading guitar manufacturer, and is working with the company in their efforts to reach out to young women.
Raining Jane’s creative path is a constantly evolving one. The band has always aimed to challenge themselves and each other to write great songs, and to never stagnate. Their sound is defined by the merging of four songwriters, three vocalists, and a variety of instruments: acoustic and electric guitars, drum kit, bass guitar, cello, cajon and sitar. Stunning vocal harmonies provide the thread in songs that are rooted in rock-folk, but pushed and pulled in a variety of other directions. On top of solid musical and songwriting chops, Raining Jane delivers a performance that is thoughtful, playful and utterly engaging.
What makes all of this especially remarkable is that Raining Jane has been carving their own, self-made niche in the music industry since 1999, completely independently. Since 2004, they have managed to support themselves entirely by touring. These four women wear all the hats: artist, booker, manager, label, driver – and so much more. They are the quintessential example of indie success.
