Crookston, Minn. (March 26, 2008) – Beautiful U Day is celebrating its tenth anniversary on Thursday, April 17, 2008. The annual initiative celebrates the University of Minnesota's natural resources, buildings and grounds. Funding for three Beautiful U Day grant proposals was recently awarded to the Crookston campus. The day is a unique opportunity to honor the University’s commitment to campus beautification through student involvement, employee contribution and community collaboration. |
The grant funded projects for 2008 include the construction of a water structure and peat bog for the Nature Nook area near Owen Hall proposed by the Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society. The funds from this grant will allow for the installation of a fountain which will cycle water from a wetland pool to a rocky outcropping where the fountain will create a waterfall effect. Funding will also help with a project to beautify the Crookston Airport proposed by Alpha Eta Rho, the international co-ed aviation fraternity. This project includes construction of a garden area at the airport. Finally, the Crookston Student Association will use funds from their proposal to sponsor an aluminum can drive contest between faculty, staff and students. Can crushers will be purchased and placed throughout the campus as part of that project.
“Beautiful U Day Grants are intended to be start-up funds to help us leverage activities on the campus,” says Christo Robberts who is chairing the Crookston campus Beautiful U Day group. “We want our campus to be a continued source of pride for the region and Beautiful U Day is a campus tradition that helps us keep it looking beautiful.” While some of the projects at the U of M, Crookston will not be completed until the weather permits, the campus will be distributing 500 energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs in an effort to remind everyone of the importance of energy conservation.
A tradition since 1997, Beautiful U Day combines hands-on beautification efforts with academic forums to celebrate University of Minnesota campuses across the state and acknowledge the responsibility to maintain both physical and natural resources.
