Thanks to the generosity of donors to the Northwest Minnesota Women’s Fund, a new scholarship has been established to benefit students who are attending the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The first award was recently announced.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Scholarship Fund awarded a $500 scholarship to Ashley Walton from Middle River, who is a senior at the University of Minnesota, Crookston majoring in biology with an emphasis in pharmacy. In her application, she stated that her passion is to be able to help people in the area by becoming a part of the health community.  She wrote, “I do believe that one person can make a positive difference in many lives, especially if it is for a communal cause.”

Walton’s professor, Dr. Pamela Elf, said that Ashley is a very dedicated and diligent student. “Ashley always gives her all. She more than meets challenges and applies herself wholeheartedly to every task.”

The Women’s Fund recently developed a scholarship program to benefit women attending the Northwest Minnesota post-secondary colleges and universities, who intend to stay in the area and give back to the region. The generous gift that established the special scholarship fund for University of Minnesota, Crookston students was received from Barbara Muesing and Charles Casey. They have both dedicated their careers to education.

Muesing said, “I’ve come to understand the quote from Winston Churchill: ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give,’ which to me means that we have a very special obligation to lend support to things that matter to us.” By establishing a scholarship sub-fund of the Northwest Minnesota Women’s Fund, their gift will help to meet the organization’s goal to encourage and equip women to reach their full potential.

Funds will be available annually for scholarship support to women who reside within the 12 counties of the Women’s Fund service area and who are pursuing a degree at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
