Crookston, Minn. (September 17, 2008) – The University of Minnesota Board of Regents gave approval recently to offer a bachelor of science in applied studies degree online through the University of Minnesota Online at the Crookston campus. The applied studies degree program addresses the needs of individuals whose educational objectives cannot be met through traditional degree programs. The degree option will be available beginning spring semester 2009.|
“Offering the bachelor of science in applied studies online is simply an extension of our on-campus program of study” says Jack Geller, Ph.D., head of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Department. “It serves as a professionally accommodating entry point for students who have previous educational or technical competencies to develop a bachelor of science degree that meets their needs.”
The bachelor of science in applied studies degree provides the opportunity for students to develop an individualized bachelor of science degree. In consultation with an assigned academic advisor, the student must complete a total of 120 credits, including the 30 semester credits awarded by the University of Minnesota campus from which he or she is seeking to graduate.
Graduates will complete an individually tailored course of study that builds upon prior education and experience, demonstrate technical competencies in selected areas of concentration, demonstrate skills in communication, problem solving and working with others in a capstone experience as well as meet career development goals related to achieving a baccalaureate degree.
Michelle Christopherson, director of the Center for Adult Learning is especially enthusiastic about what the applied studies degree online means for students. “This online addition will provide another flexible alternative for students wishing to obtain their bachelor’s degree online,” explains Christopherson. “As the University of Minnesota Online, we provide an opportunity for all students who want to complete their degree online.. Our goal is to deliver another quality University of Minnesota degree with exceptional service to placebound students interested in making a lane change in their career or by completing their undergraduate degree online.”
