(Crookston, Minn.)- The city of Crookston broke ground on a new hockey arena on Thursday, September 25. The new $14.5 million dollar arena will feature three sheets of ice as well as 1,200 seats in the main arena. It will serve as the home for the University of Minnesota, Crookston Men’s Hockey program as well as the home to the Crookston High School Boys and Girls Hockey teams, youth hockey and the Crookston Figure Skating Association. The new arena will be located at the corner of Fisher Avenue and Barrette Street.

U of M, Crookston Head Hockey Coach Gary Warren is excited about the new facility. “The new Crookston Arena Complex will give the University of Minnesota, Crookston Hockey program an immediate boost, as we venture into NCAA Division II Independent status,” says Coach Warren. “It will enable us to attract quality student athletes at the NCAA Division II level as well as showcase our community, university and facilities on a regional and national stage. This is a very exciting time as we embark into the future and a new era of Golden Eagle Hockey.”

Golden Eagle Athletic Director Stephanie Helgeson echoed many of Coach Warren’s sentiments. “It was a great day for the city of Crookston and the region,” said Helgeson. “Facilities are a very important part of a successful athletic program. This new facility will allow the University of Minnesota, Crookston Hockey program to recruit and retain quality student-athletes and to enhance the student-athlete experience. We feel very fortunate to be able to have a facility of this caliber in our community.”

The new arena is set to open in 2010.
