Zabel Tallies Second Straight Double-Double as Golden Eagles Defeat Beavers 75-63

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team faced off against Bemidji State University (BSU) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles led the entire first half and only relinquished the lead twice in the second half to take the 75-63 victory. It is the first time since the 2004-05 season that Minnesota, Crookston has started the conference season 2-0.
 
Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) rallied the Golden Eagles again tonight. Zabel scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the first half to help the team to a 37-32 halftime lead. Minnesota, Crookston’s defense sealed the victory, holding BSU to 28% shooting from the field in the second half in a well rounded team effort and second straight NSIC victory.
 
Zabel returned to the court in the second half to score 17 more points for a season and career high 30 points. Kari Score was the last UMC player to score 30 or more points (1/14/06 vs. MSU Moorhead). She shot 8-14 from the field, 1-1 from long range and 13-14 from the free-throw line, tying a University of Minnesota, Crookston single game record in free-throws made. Defensively, she grabbed 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double and has led the team in scoring for three straight games. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored 13 points and dished five assists. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) led all players with 4 blocks and added 11 points and nine rebounds in a strong 30 minutes of play. Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) played tough on the glass, grabbing a career high 10 rebounds and added seven points in the victory.
 
Bemidji State was led by Colleen McKay who scored 16 points in the loss. Heidi Matzke added 12 points and Samantha Baldwin led all players with 12 rebounds.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC. Bemidji State drops to 2-6 overall and 0-2  in conference play. The Golden Eagles travel to Concordia University- St. Paul and St. Cloud State on Friday, December 12 and Saturday, December 13. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. both nights.
