(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men’s Hockey team outshot Northland College 54-25 and opened up a 3-0 lead after two periods on their way to a 4-2 victory in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) action tonight at the Crookston Civic Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Golden Eagles got on the board at 4:41 of the second period when John Lombardi (Jr, Fwd, Burnsville, Minn.) scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Matt Marchel (Jr, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.). U of M, Crookston scored again at 6:27 when Nigel Smith (Fr, Fwd, White Rock, B.C.) found the back of the net with an even-strength goal. He was assisted by Marchel and Ben Sullivan (So, Def, Crookston, Minn.). The Golden Eagles saw their lead swell to 3-0 at 17:40 of the second period when Fred Kooser (Jr, Fwd, Omaha, Neb.) scored an even-strength goal off assists from Steve Tschirgi (Fr, Def, Neenah, Wis.) and Collin Perry (Jr, Fwd, Grand Forks, N.D.).
The Lumberjacks got on the board at 6:00 of the third period when Cody Roy scored a power play goal off assists from Mathias Oertel and Joe Belanger. U of M, Crookston responded with an even-strength goal by Chase Haubursin (Fr, Fwd, Santa Rosa, Cal.) at 6:40. He was assisted by Matthew Justice (So, Fwd, Parker, Colo.). Northland College countered at 12:09 of the third period with another power play goal. Matt McKinlay was the benefactor this time assisted by Tim Werner and Ryan Pageau.
The Lumberjacks were unable to score again as Bryan Dalbec (Fr, G, Superior, Wis.) was stellar in net recording 23 saves. Daniel McIntosh stopped 50 shots for Northland College.
Northland College falls to 1-12-0 overall and 1-8-0 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles improve to 2-14-0 overall and 2-9-0 in the MCHA. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at the Crookston Civic Arena at 2 p.m.
