In an effort to raise the awareness of poverty and hunger, the University of Minnesota, Crookston will host a hunger banquet on Thursday, February 26, 2009. The hunger banquet will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Sargeant Student Center Bede Ballroom. Tickets for event are $2 for students and $12 for adults. All proceeds from the hunger banquet go to the Crookston Emergency Food Shelf at the Care and Share. To purchase tickets or for more information, contact Lisa Loegering, assistant director of service learning at 218-281-8526 (loege005@umn.edu).

The event, sponsored by the Office of Serving Learning, will give participants a chance to experience a meal as a low income, middle income, or upper income global citizen. In an effort to educate people on hunger worldwide, participants will experience firsthand the divisions in social class.

Currently, there are 854 million people in the world suffering from hunger, and every day 30,000 children under the age of five die of preventable causes, including malnutrition. The hunger banquet is an effort to get people one step closer to taking a stand against hunger through awareness and fundraising.
