Golden Eagles Defeat Northland College 3-0 to Earn Sweep

(Crookston, Minn.) – Bryan Dalbec (Fr, G, Superior, Wis.) stopped all 14 Northland College shots as the University of Minnesota, Crookston shut out the Lumberjacks 3-0 on Saturday in Ashland, Wis. in a Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) game. The win gives the Golden Eagles the season sweep over Northland.

 

U of M, Crookston got on the board at 3:37 of the first period when Fred Kooser (Jr, Fwd, Omaha, Neb.) scored an even-strength goal off assists from John Lombardi (Jr, Fwd, Burnsville, Minn.) and Brett Saari (Sr, Fwd, Green Bay, Wis.).

 

After a scoreless second period, the Golden Eagles made the score 2-0 at 2:56 of the third period when Steve Tschirgi (Fr, Def, Neenah, Wis.) scored a power play goal off assists from Nigel Smith (Fr, Fwd, White Rock, B.C.) and Philip Tesoriero (Fr, Fwd, Boulder, Colo.). U of M, Crookston put the game away at 15:07 of the third period when Lombardi scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Tschirgi to make the final score 3-0.

 

Northland College falls to 1-23-1 overall and 1-18-1 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles improve to 5-20-0 and 5-15-0 in the MCHA . They finish sixth in the league.

 

The University of Minnesota, Crookston will open the 2009 MCHA Playoffs by traveling to Milwaukee, Wis. to face the Milwaukee School of Engineering who finished third in the league. Games will take place on Friday, February 20 and Saturday, February 21 with the puck dropping at 7:05 p.m. and 2:05 p.m. respectively.
