University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball Team Returns to Action Against UW-Stout

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston will look to get its first wins of the season after nearly a month off since its games against Dakota State University and Bemidji State University. The Golden Eagles face the University of Wisconsin-Stout of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) on Wednesday, March 4. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. It will be the season opener for the Blue Devils.

U of M, Crookston is 0-4 overall and led by Jake Poehler (So, OF, Coon Rapids, Minn.) who is hitting .333 (4 for 12) with one RBI. Devin Croal (Fr, IF, Coon Rapids, Minn.) is hitting .308 (4 for 13) with 3 RBI. Lincoln Messner (Jr, RHP, Winthrop, Minn.) has a 3.60 ERA and five strikeouts. Paul Krebs (Sr, RHP/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) has a 4.91 ERA and seven strikeouts. Three pitchers have ERA’s of 0.00. Steve Schroer (Fr, RHP, Coon Rapids, Minn.) has three strikeouts, Max Saarinen (Jr, LHP/OF, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) has one strikeout and Kyle Kovnesky (Fr, LHP, Coleman, Wis.) has three strikeouts.

The University of Wisconsin-Stout finished the 2008 season with an overall record of 12-25 and WIAC record of 4-20. They defeated U of M, Crookston 7-3 and 13-5 in the Metrodome in 2008. Top returnees for Coach Craig Walter’s squad include Brandon O’Connell who hit .338 (23 for 68) with 16 RBI and Greg Smolinski who hit (.319) 38 for 119 with 22 RBI.
