UW-Stout Sweeps Golden Baseball Team 2-0 & 8-1

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of University of Wisconsin-Stout rode solid pitching in the first game and capitalized on six University of Minnesota, Crookston errors in the second game on their way to a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Eagles today at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. The Blue Devils took game one 2-0 and captured the night-cap 8-1.


Game One Recap


Ryan Gilbertson’s two run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning propelled UW-Stout to the 2-0 victory. Four Blue Devil pitchers combined on a one-hitter. Russ Jiskra threw three innings to get the victory striking out two and walking five. Lincoln Messner (Jr, RHP, Winthrop, Minn.) was stellar on the hill for the Golden Eagles throwing six innings. He struck out three and walked one. Teddy Gutman (Jr, IF, Burlington, Iowa) recorded U of M, Crookston’s lone hit with an infield single in the sixth inning.


Game Two Recap


The Blue Devils took advantage of six Golden Eagle errors and scored six runs in the first three innings on their way to an 8-1 victory in the night-cap. Brian Giebel was 2 for 4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored. Jerrel Enerson-Matthews was also 2 for 4. Brandon O’Connell was 2 for 5 with a triple. Max Saarinen (Jr, OF/LHP, Detroit Lakes, Minn.) had an RBI single for the Golden Eagles. Alex Gregor (So, RHP, Shakopee, Minn.) threw a solid three innings of relief allowing one earned run on three hits. He struck out five and walked one.


UW-Stout opens the season at 2-0. The University of Minnesota, Crookston falls to 0-6. The Golden Eagles return to action on March 13-18 when they travel to Fort Myers, Fla. to take part in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
