University of Minnesota, Crookston to Host More than 1000 High School Students for the Annual Ag Activities Day on December 1, 2006

CROOKSTON, MN (November 19, 2006) – The annual Ag Activities Day competition, held for more than 25 years, brings some 1300 area students from 50 high schools to the University of Minnesota, Crookston to compete for $32,000 in scholarship money. This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1, 2006.
Faculty in agriculture and natural resources oversee the more than 20 contests ranging from horticulture and forestry to ag mechanics, livestock and sales.  “Ag Activities Day brings students from all over northwest Minnesota to our campus to compete,” Ron Del Vecchio, head of the Agriculture Department said. “It is an exciting day for them, and one we look forward to hosting every year. Students have the opportunity to match their skills against their peers and win scholarships; it is a great time for everyone.”

An awards ceremony culminates the day. Scholarships, plaques and certificates are awarded to school teams and individuals for each contest. The top three individuals in each contest are awarded scholarships in the amount of $750, $600 and $450 respectively. The event is sponsored by the Crookston campus Agriculture and Natural Resources departments
