, 2007) – Sean Shin was recently named the English as a Second Language (ESL) and international student recruitment program director at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC).

Shin brought ESL to UMC in the fall of 2005 and has been working as a visiting professor in the Learning Abroad Center on campus. The ESL program became part of UMC's curriculum in June 2006 and has grown significantly, in large part due to Shin's efforts in collaboration with Chancellor Emeritus Don Sargeant and Study Abroad Coordinator Rae French.

UMC has seen a significant increase in the number of international students. There are more than 100 international students on campus this spring, compared with 30 in fall 2006. Nearly 60 new international students have joined the student body this semester – due to unique collaborative agreements with universities in Korea and China. These partnerships are part of an overall effort to offer global and diverse cultural experiences for students so that they can succeed in the global economy. Establishing international relationships is an important part of the campus strategic positioning effort.

Shin’s responsibilities include the development and implementation of ESL and international student recruitment strategies; corresponding with prospective students; working with universities, governments and student agents from various countries; and working with prospective students and providing ESL and international student support services. He brings extensive experience in international student recruitment and ESL education and also has experience teaching business and ESL courses in the United States and abroad.

Shin received his master’s in business administration from Syracuse University, N.Y., and SeJong University, Seoul, Korea, and a bachelor’s in economics from SeJong University, Seoul. He has recruited for Pacific Lutheran University, Pierce College and Tacoma Community College all in Tacoma, Wash. as well as Johnson and Wales University, Providence, R.I.
