Festivities Planned to Celebrate Renovations at Ed Widseth Field on August 31
August 24, 2007

A community celebration is planned for Friday, August 31, to commemorate some $400,000 in renovations that have taken place at Ed Widseth Field on the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus. The celebration, which includes tours, tailgating and a ceremony, will take place as part of the Crookston High School Pirate Football season opener with Thief River Falls.

Tours of the facilities will be given by Golden Eagle student-athletes from 4:30 – 5:30 pm. A tailgate party hosted by the UMC Teambackers and Pirate Boosters will run in the parking lot from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 5:30 pm. There will be remarks from U of M, Crookston Chancellor Charles H. Casey and Crookston Superintendent of Schools Wayne Gilman. Game kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and a brief halftime ceremony will highlight the evening’s festivities.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston and Crookston School District worked together on the investments to relocate the public entrance to the field and resurface the track as well as build a new concession stand, ticket area and handicapped accessible bathrooms. The renovations and upgrades are part of the U of M, Crookston’s ongoing commitment to support Golden Eagle athletics and Chancellor Casey’s decision to compete at the NCAA Division II level. The relocation of the gate to the east side of the field was designed to increase safety for fans attending Golden Eagle and Pirate events.

Costs for construction of the concession/restroom/ticket facility are being paid for by the U of M, Crookston. Track repairs are being paid for by the Crookston Independent School District.
