August 24, 2007

The Vikings of Augustana College broke open a close game with three second half goals and went on to defeat the University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Soccer team by a score of 4-0 in the season opener for both teams.

Augustana wasted little time with Jenna Doerneman scoring just 5:35 into the contest. Goalkeeper Athena Mussenden (So., Kenosha, Wis.) kept the game close for the rest of the half. The Vikings added two goals by Tina Harris (46:55) and Katie Shandri (50:29) within the first five minutes of the second half. They closed out the scoring when Kayla Peek tallied a goal at 72:57.

Mussenden left the game with four saves. Anna Ogaard (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Leyla Castillo (Fr., Miami, Fla.) also saw time in the net.

U of M, Crookston will return to action on Sunday, August 27 when they travel to Bemidji, Minn. for a non-conference match-up with Northern Michigan University. Game time is 12:00 pm.
