(Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women’s Soccer team opened today’s game on their heels and found themselves down 2-0 in the first half. The team turned up the intensity in the second half to cut the deficit to 2-1 but the clock was not in the Golden Eagles favor as the team couldn’t find the back of the net again before the ninety-minute horn went off.

Bemidji State University started the scoring at the 17:22 mark of the first half. Alysha Domiano used a header off of a corner kick from Kara Smyth to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. BSU’s Lauren Olivares scored the eventual game winner with less than five minutes to go in the first half. Olivares was assisted by Jamie Ford and Kelly Hyvare.

The Golden Eagles picked up the intensity in the second half, dominating the Beavers for most of the half. UMC had 13 shots in the game with nine coming in the second half including six shots on goal. The team also took four corner kicks in the second half after they failed to have one in the first half. Kelsey Palmer (Fr., Fwd., Crookston, Minn.) sparked the team at the 78 minute mark when she beat the BSU goalkeeper with assists from Alyssa Jensen (Jr., Fwd. Rice Lake, Wis.) and Megan Gibeault (Fr., Fwd., Green Bay, Wis.). The final five minutes of the game were played in the BSU zone as the Golden Eagles scratched to tie the game. Samantha Welch (Fr., Def., Arlington, Wash.) found another gear taking six shots with four on goal and one going just high of the crossbar. Samantha Ross played tough between the pipes for the Beavers, making eight crucial saves to earn the win. Anna Ogaard (Fr., GK, Maple Grove, Minn.) and Athena Mussenden (So., GK, Kenosha, Wis.) each played a half in net for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles are 4-11-0 on the season and 2-3-0 in the NSIC, the Beavers up their record to 7-6-3 overall and 3-1-1 in NSIC play. UMC returns to the field tomorrow to host Providence College in non-conference action. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
