Shou-Ching Chao, Ph.D., Named Coordinator of the Writing Center at the U of M, Crookston

CROOKSTON, Minn. (October 30, 2007) – With the renewal of the Writing Center at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, the campus is pleased to welcome new Writing Center Coordinator Shou-Ching Chao, Ph.D.

Chao will direct the activities in the Writing Center as well as coordinate both professional and peer tutors. He will also serve as a liaison between the Writing Center and members of the faculty. “The Writing Center is available to help students with the strategies and skills they will need for writing, including organizing, editing and revising a paper,” said Chao. “We will help writers at any level improve their writing skills.”

Originally from China, Chao received both his doctorate and master’s degrees in English from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. Prior to coming to the U of M, Crookston, he taught composition and English literature on the Twin Cities’ campus and has worked in various other educational programs.

Since coming to the campus, Chao has been working on the mission, services, policies and procedures of the Writing Center. Coordinating the Writing Center will give Chao the opportunity to focus on his passion, working with students. In addition to his Writing Center responsibilities, Chao will teach two courses in spring 2008 as part of the U of M, Crookston’s English as a Second Language program.

Rand Rasmussen, Ph.D., director of the Academic Assistance Center, is pleased to have Chao join the staff. “We are excited to have someone with the expertise of Dr. Chao join us,” Rasmussen affirms. “His skill set will help us provide the writing services our students need. Both our domestic students and international students will benefit from the services. From structure and syntax to content, we are going to be able to offer students help with any concern they have connected to writing at our Center.”
