(Crookston, Minn.)-  The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) tipped-off the NSIC home opener against the Wildcats of Wayne State College in Lysaker Gymnasium tonight.  The bench lit the fire for the Golden Eagles scoring 33 points in the game to the Wildcats nine. However, the bench could not overcome the hump as the men fell tonight 73-66.

The first half was well fought by both teams as the score was 28-26 in Wayne States favor at the end of the first 20 minutes.  Bryce Cummings (Soph., G, Mukwonago, Wis.) scored eight points in the half and dished out three assists.  The Golden Eagles as a team took advantage of second chance opportunities scoring seven points on offensive rebounds to the Wildcats four.  For the Wildcats, Jamar Diggs led the team with seven first half points, three assists and a steal.

After a close first half, the second half proved to be just as exciting.  Akeem Cubie (Fr., G, Minneapolis, Minn.) came off the bench to score 14 points and finished with his season best 16 points.  Cubie also had four rebounds and a steal. Cummings finished in the double-digit range with 15 points and four assists. Justin Peddycoart (Jr., C, Springfield, Ill.) came off the bench as well for UMC and stepped up defensively recording three blocks.  For the Wildcats, four players recorded double-digit scores. Jonathon Thomas scored 16, Jamar Diggs scored 15, Matt Rathje posted 13 in the post and David Walters finished with 11 points.  Rathje and Thomas both finished with double-doubles on the night recording 10 rebounds each.  Bryce Caldwell scored nine points and led all players with seven assists.

Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in NSIC play. Wayne State improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in NSIC play.  The men will try to bounce back tomorrow against the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs.  The game is set to start at 8:00 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.
