Offensive Rebounds Help Dragons Edge Golden Eagles 82-74

(Moorhead, Minn.)- The Dragons of MSU Moorhead used timely offensive rebounds to score 11 second chance points in tonight’s match-up to edge the University of Minnesota Crookston 82-74 in NSIC play.

 

The Golden Eagles and the Dragons exchanged leads three times in the first half in a highly contested first 20 minutes of play. UMC committed 13 turnovers in the half that led to 18 MSU Moorhead points but UMC shot a solid 42 percent from the field to go into the half down by just nine points 44-35. Gina Jaroszewski (Fr, F, Moorhead, Minn.) sparked the Golden Eagles with eight points in the first half to lead the squad. MSU Moorhead’s Shelly Soule and Alison Nash-Gerlach led all scorers with nine points.

 

The slow first half start cost the Golden Eagles as they outplayed the Dragon’s in the second session 39-38. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) exploded to lead all scorers with 16 points in the second half. She shot 4-8 from the field, 2-4 from three-point range and a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line and finished the game with a career high 23 points. Kim Grant (Fr, C, Minneapolis, Minn.) played a great game for the Golden Eagles scoring a career high 10 points and Jaroszewski finished with 11 points in the contest. As a team, UMC shot a solid 44 percent from the field. The Dragon’s were led by Alison Nash-Gerlach’s 16 points and seven rebounds.

 

Tonight’s loss takes the Golden Eagles to 4-6 on the season, and 0-4 in the NSIC. The Dragons improve to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Golden Eagle’s return home on Tuesday, December 11 to host the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
