(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men’s Hockey team played a close game with Northland College on Friday night. Unfortunately, the Lumberjacks got the final say with a goal at under five minutes remaining to come away with a 4-3 victory in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) action in Ashland, Wis.
Northland opened the scoring at 16:25 elapsed in the first period when Zach Kozak scored a power play goal to put the Lumberjacks up 1-0. U of M, Crookston countered at 17:24 when Ryan Tucker (Sr., Fwd., Crookston, Minn.) scored a power play goal off assists from Teal Plaine (Sr., Fwd., Hallock, Minn.) and Spencer Syvertson (Fr., Def., Wasilla, AK) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lumberjacks regained the lead at 6:25 of the second period when Rick Delecke scored an even strength goal. Martin Husicka (Fr., Fwd., Vsetin, Czech Republic) tied the game 2-2 at 9:39 with an even strength goal. He was assisted by Alex Maginnis (Fr., Fwd., Mason City, Iowa) and Eddie Hanson (Fr., Fwd., Apple Valley, Minn.).
U of M, Crookston opened the third period on a high note when Tucker scored his second goal of the game in short handed fashion at 6:45 to put the Golden Eagles up 3-2. He was assisted by Matt Hann (Sr., Fwd., Crookston, Minn.) and Syvertson.
However, the Lumberjacks took over from there. Kozack scored his second goal of the game in the even strength variety at 9:41 to tie things up 3-3. Then Nick Mattson scored an unassisted, even strength goal at 15:23 to give Northland College a 4-3 victory.
Northland College improves their record to 2-11-0 overall and 2-7-0 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-11-0 overall and 2-7-0 in the MCHA. The two teams will resume action on Saturday, January 12. The puck drops at 4:00 pm.
