CROOKSTON, Minn. (January 11, 2008) – Ag Arama will take place at the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26, 2008, in the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC), located just north of the campus. Alumni and friends of the Crookston campus are invited to take part in the activities.

Ag Arama Advisor Terrill Bradford encourages everyone to attend this annual event, “Ag Arama is a chance for us to showcase our students in agriculture-related competition and everyone has a great time. We welcome our alumni and anyone interested in the activities to come out and join us.”

Beginning on Friday evening as students put the finishing touches on their animals, the Animal Science Association is sponsoring a chili feed. Students, alumni, family and friends are encouraged to come out to socialize, watch preparations and enjoy some chili at UTOC beginning at 5 p.m.

Animal science showmanship contests run from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Students compete in Western and English horse showmanship, lamb lead, and dairy, beef, sheep, and swine showmanship. There will be two categories for each species, novice and experienced. The novices are paired with experienced students prior to the contest to prepare. The ag sales contest is also held concurrently with the showmanship contests.

Following the showmanship contests, several clubs at the U of M, Crookston will be offering games and entertainment for all ages. Several Natural Resources Club games, including men’s and women’s crosscut saw contests, log splitting and the log toss, will take place. The Dairy Club will sponsors a cow milking contest and the Agronomy Club will offer the “Grain Game.” From 9 a.m. to noon, there is an ag industries show sponsored by a number of local businesses including Crookston Implement, Titan Machinery and Ziegler.

A picnic style lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday with the awards ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. followed by the coronation of the Ag Arama royalty. The highlight for UMC alumni is the alumni social held at the Irishman’s Shanty in Crookston at 5:30- 7:30 p.m.The weekend culminates with a dance at the Northland from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
