(Winona, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston women’s basketball team entered its long road weekend tonight as the team traveled to Winona, Minn. to take on the Warriors in NSIC action. Despite the score, it was a tightly contested match as the Warriors used the final 5:30 of the first half to take a 12 point lead into the half and the 13 point victory 75-62.

The first 15 minutes of the first were well played with one tie and two lead changes. Winona got hot from the field with just over five minutes left in the first session to take its first double-digit lead and go into the half up 12 points 39-27. Jamie Zelinsky (Fr, G, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with 12 points. She went 3-4 from the field and 6-7 from the free-throw line and led all players on the boards with four rebounds. Other than Wurtz’s hot-hand late, the teams played an identical 20 minutes of play. Minnesota, Crookston scored 16 points in the paint to WSU’s 14, WSU scored 11 points off turnovers to UMC’s 10 and second chance points were tied at four a piece.

The second half was played much like the first as the Golden Eagles picked up the offense to play within one point of the Warriors 36-35. Minnesota, Crookston as a team won several of the team statistical categories but Winona began to move the ball better, finishing with four players scoring double-digit points. Offensively, Zelinsky led all scorers with nine points in the second half for a game high of 21. Diana Taddy (Fr, G, Two Rivers, Wis.) added nine points in the half to finish the game with 11. She also added three steals for a game high four. Winona was led by Wurtz’s 18 first half points. Jenny Steffen scored 16, Amanda Reimer scored 11 and Natalie Gigler added 10 points and a game high eight rebounds.

Tonight’s loss brings the Golden Eagles to 4-13 overall and 0-8 in NSIC play. Winona State advances to 14-5 overall and 4-4 in NSIC play.  The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Upper Iowa to play the Peacocks. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
