Finlandia Defeat Golden Eagles by 5-2 Score

(Crookston, Minn.) – Finlandia University took control of a tie game with four straight goals and went on to defeat the University of Minnesota, Crookston by a 5-2 score tonight in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) action at the Crookston Civic Arena.


The Golden Eagles opened the game’s scoring at 12:59 of the first period when Matt Waclawik (So, Fwd, Fergus Falls, Minn.) scored an even strength goal off assists from Fred Kooser (So, Fwd, Omaha, Neb.) and Eddie Hanson (Fr, Fwd, Apple Valley, Minn.). The Lions countered with two goals to close out the first period. Keith Johnstone scored an even strength goal at 13:23 while Tiger Marcotte scored a power play goal at 17:22.


The second period saw more of the same as Josh Paquette scored a short-handed goal at 18:33 to put Finlandia up 3-1 while Joe Beaudry scored an even-strength goal at 19:07 to give the Lions a 4-1 lead.


The Golden Eagles got back on the board at 8:01 of the third period when Matt Hann (Sr, Fwd, Crookston, Minn.) scored a power play goal off assists from Matt Marchel (So, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) and Ryan Tucker (Sr, Fwd, Crookston, Minn.). However, Finlandia closed out the scoring at 18:24 of the third period when Travis Hanson scored an empty-net goal to give the Lions the 5-2 victory.


The loss drops U of M, Crookston’s overall record to 5-17-0 and MCHA record to 4-13-0. Finlandia University improves their overall record to 13-7-2 and MCHA record to 12-5-0. The two teams resume action tomorrow at 2:00 pm at the Crookston Civic Arena.
