Current Services

GLBTA Programs Coordinator Office Hours – Please feel free to contact the GLBTA Programs Coordinator (jorge382@umn.edu) for individual appointments or stop by the Equality Room on Thursdays. The role of the Coordinator is to provide information, resources and referral information for students, faculty, and staff regarding gender identity and expression and sexual orientation identities. Please feel free to request a private and confidential meeting.

Equality Room – The intended use of this space is that everyone who enters this room may safely and comfortably self-express without fear of discrimination, harm, or exposure for being different. This includes differences of sexual orientation and identity, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic status, physical and mental ability, sex and age. These are the only guidelines for use of the Equality Room. Please feel free to use this space to gather with friends, study, meet, and relax. The faculty, administration, and staff who are allies of this project are committed to keeping this room unlocked for meetings and student use.

Programming – Events that support the mission of GLBTA Programs at UMC will be sponsored or co-sponsored on a monthly basis. These events will be advertised widely and all are welcome to attend.

Ally Training – The Coordinator of GLBTA Programs at UMC will organize and implement opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to be educated and explore Ally identities. An Ally is a person who uses one's own privilege to advocate for marginalized individuals.

Consultation – The GLBTA Programs Coordinator offers consultation to faculty and staff on teaching about gender and sexuality and advocating for equality. The role of the Programs Coordinator also extends to advocacy and education about intersections of cultural identities and multiculturalism, broadly defined.

Community Building – Efforts to provide monthly programming and maintenance of the Equality Room as a safe space are in the service of building a GLBT-affirmative community and fostering a welcoming climate the University of Minnesota – Crookston. Community building and climate improvement are also served by continued Ally Training, consultation, facilitation of difficult dialogues, and connections with surrounding communities and organizations.

Systemwide Events – Students are welcome to attend events sponsored by systemwide GLBTA Programs and the Minnesota Campus Alliance. These include the GLBTA Student Leadership Retreat and Systemwide Summit on GLBTA Concerns. The Systemwide Standing Commission on GLBT Concerns also reserves a position for undergraduate students and faculty/staff representation from each of the campuses of the University of Minnesota.

SUPPORT MECHANISMS

Faculty and Staff Allies – Individuals who identify as Allies to GLBT people have been identified within administrative staff and faculty. One role of the GLBTA Programs Coordinator is to utilize these Allies to build support and foster climate improvement. A list of identified and consenting Allies is held by the Coordinator and these individuals are contacted with updated information about the efforts of UMC GLBTA Programs and solicited to help in this mission.

UMC Diversity Programs -- The U of M Crookston is committed to Diversity Programs and supports the following initiatives as part of its mission:

  • To promote understanding of the cultural and ethnic heritages of African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino/Hispanic Americans, as well as other diverse cultures at the U of M Crookston
  • To increase enrollment, retention, and success of historically underrepresented and under-served students (i.e., racially-diverse students, first-generation college students, students for whom English is a second language, and low-income students)
  • To increase recruitment and retention of culturally diverse faculty and staff
  • To enhance curriculum development through the inclusion of multicultural perspectives
  • To provide resources for multicultural campus and community initiatives
  • To promote the understanding and appreciation of issues related to race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, age, beliefs, ability levels, economic status, sexual identity, gender identity, and religion
  • To create a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment that encourages all of its members – student and employee alike – to grow and achieve their goals.

In the spirit of broadening horizons and enabling campus and community members to appreciate different cultures and ethnicities, the ultimate aim of University of Minnesota Crookston 's commitment to Diversity Programs is to empower people of all backgrounds for successful living in a global society.

 

GLBTA Community Advisory Board -- The advisory board serves as a mechanism for organizing the efforts of allied faculty, staff, and administration that contribute to the mission of GLBTA Programs at UMC. The board connects GLBT advocacy and outreach to the roles and responsibilities of campus-wide departments and organizations.

 

Twin Cities GLBTA Programs Office and Systemwide Commission – The Programs Office on the Twin Cities campus, the Systemwide Director of GLBTA Programs (Anne Phibbs), and the Systemwide Standing Commission on GLBT Concerns support GLBTA Programs at the University of Minnesota – Crookston in the following ways:

  • Provide resources and funding for programming and other initiatives
  • Provide funding for travel and other mechanisms to facilitate Crookston's ability to contribute to systemwide efforts
  • Connect Crookston campus with other training and education resources, including Minnesota Campus Alliance
  • Advocate for GLBTA Programs and Coordinator position within Office of Equity and Diversity and UMC administration
  • Contribute matching funds with the Crookston campus to finance the pay and budget of the GLBTA Programs Coordinator
  • Provide mentorship to UMC GLBTA Programs and Programs Coordinator
